Only series a Resistor (not more than 100 Ohm) as a current limiter is workable but will degrad the sound quality. The better way is use a step down transformer to lower Voltage of output. I had just finished a Headphone adapter prototype. It will be in Canada Hifi Show soon. It can match with all amplifiers to have a Headphone output but keep amplifiers in work just switch out the speakers when you listen to Headphone. It will call UHC-Basic (Unversal Headphone converter Basic).
I even had test it direct connect to CD , Sony SACD-777 and some Low impedance output pre-amps. I use a Victor HP-D77 Headphone to test it. It work fine at all , with wide band width. I hope it will retail around US$40 in North American. Will have a High grade model call UHC-Home will be in more better band width.I
