The overriding issue in a head amp is the S/N ratio. It is VERY difficult to obtain a satisfactory result using tubes. Counterpoint made a commercial unit that was built around the 6DJ8.For a DIY project, success is much more likely if a transformer "stepup" is constructed. Raw transformers for such a project can be sourced from: Sowter, Lundahl, Audio Note, Jensen, and, perhaps, other vendors.
If you already have a tubed phono stage, modifying it to employ Allen Wright's FET cascode is an alternative to a separate "stepup". The FET cascode gets consistently good "press" for its sound.
