Thanks all.

I don't think the same measures will apply to cats and kids, though. You can jump up and scare the hell out of them, but what if they decide to mess around with the stuff when you're not there? Besides, I don't want my kids sitting on a psychiatrist's couch someday, discussing their mysterious phobias about audio gear. Some electrical shock device MIGHT work, but I'm afraid that might add noise to the electricity for the equipment.
Seriously, though, I already heve the stuff up high and off to one side, on shelves of my making. I wanted to do something a little more ambitious, with built in sound dampening, etc...I'll just use my noodle.
