Hi gregs,You make a good point regarding capacitor size, but in reality it is not absolutely necesary to replace the 47uF electrolytic with the same value film cap. You could replace it with a 10 uF/200 V film polypropylene cap which should be about 70% the volume of an average box of matches. You should be able to make room in the CD player for two of these, remebering that the cap need not necessarily be mounted at PCB level: you could try a few cm above the board, if the cap has long leads or even under the board. By changing from a 47 uF cap to a 10 uF cap the corner frequency of the DC blocking high pass filter formed by the cap would then be 4.7 times higher(47 divided by 10). This is not usually an issue and does not effect the audible low frequencies as the corner frequency is often below 1 Hz, although you could check this to be sure for a 1st order high pass filter:(f=1/2*pi*R*C). f= filter corner freq (Hz), R=resistance (from cap to ground)(Ohms), C= Capaciatnce (Farads).
Hope this helps,
HAVE FUN
