How to avoid 60Hz CRAP from PC to hi-fi?

64.193.131.21

I've been trying to deal with this for a while, but have not yet figured out a solution. Maybe someone here can help: when connecting my computer to the hi-fi, I get a TON of 60Hz noise injected into the signal. It's only a few dB quieter than the signal! I know this can be alleviated if I put them on the same outlet, but that's the last thing I want to do.

I used to get around this by running the audio out from the 4x gain on the sound card, disconnecting it when not in use so as not to muck up the other inputs. This output has worse sound quality, but at least there was a useable signal. However, now in the newer cards there's no high gain output so I have to deal with an ultra-noisy line-level signal.

I don't believe this is a ground loop because I have also tried it with a shielded cable and it made no difference; it appears to be because the grounds are different. Am I wrong in this assertion? What can I do to get around it?

Best,

Chris
