In my listening room I require a panel which hangs above an open fireplace between the speakers. I constructed a 3 1/2-inch thick panel using the techniques suggested by Jon Risch. I covered it in chinese blue burlap. I have consulted with a local artist who has found that standard acylic artists paint will indeed stick to this. We (actually I'll just watch) are planning to do an abstract painting on the panel which won't cover more than 10 percent of the burlap. That just represents my guess at an amount of coverage that might not affect the absorptive properties of the panel.I looked at artist's canvas and the fabric is woven too tightly to allow soundwaves to pass through. You could try doing your "thing" on burlap. There's probably a market for "spousally-correct" room treatments :-)
