Re: PHONO STAGE : Is single stage / inverting sounds better than double stage / non-inverting ?

I tried both a single stage and two stage (E88CC based) phonos a while back. I was stretching my KISS philosophy as far as I could. The single stage had four tube sections in paralell for increased gain, but still didn't have enuff output, and more seriously was the passive RIAA EQ which was unbuffered, this was not used for listening very long. The twostage was a single tube, each triode half being one stage. This sounded pretty good, but still didn't have enuff gain for my system. I now use a three stage phono, with three E188CCs where only one triode per tube is used to limit interaction. This also has each EQ isolated between tubes, which I believe helps getting the EQ right. This has gain of 40dB at 1kHz and sounds pretty damn good.

Unless u plan to use ICs it's rather diffucult to get a gain of 1000(60dB), espescially linearly. So I vote for a two or three stage phono preamp.
