i use a DBX 124X with my Revox B-77mkI. i don't find the 'breathing' that most people do to be obtrusive, but then again, i record mainly tchno and electronic original music, so the masking effect is pretty high.

in the more professional circles, you could try to locate any of the Rocktron noise reduction units- but they are sometimes the worst for breathing and spurious noise other than hiss added to the playback. or you could try to find a Carver Autocorrelation NR unit.

i've seen both types around in pawn shops (never had the cash on hand, damn it!), and being that they are single ended NRs (no encode, just decode to worry about), you can always play the tapes elsewhere with out the hassle of hauling the NR gear with you!
