Actually, treating the area between the speakers and to their rear is the most neglected aspect of room treatment (see the Haas effect from Acoustics books for reference). The delay from the center back to the listener confuses the ear and affects perception of imaging. But the most important part when tuning your room/speakers is to ascertain whether the "brightnesss" you complain about is in the mid/upper midrange or a function of a rising upper octave response. Too often we treat brightness as if it was a upper octave problem when the problem often lies lower down (or is actually a distortion, not a frequency domain problem). Many times if you damp the upper octaves, the problem will still remain. I suggest if you can, totally remove the TV from between the speakers when listening. Sometimes, the TV can radiate EM fields which can affect the speaker's sound if it's too close to the speaker.
When setting up speakers, there is a critical tradeoff between spacing them too far apart and losing center fill vs. them being too close together and losing transparency. Once that is done, I suggest using some sort of room treatment between/behind the speakers - for both dipoles and dynamic drivers. I've had good success with either ASC Half round tube traps or Room tunes (I've also heard some good effect with the old Monster cable panels). What you will hear is more precise imaging, dynamics and transparency. What surprised me the most though, and I heard this with WATT/Puppies as well with other speakers, is the effect on image height. You could get quite a bit better image height if you damped this center wall region.
