Last summer I rebuilt my kitchen-lab with this thing in mind, too.The bench is Pi-shaped of three Ikea tabletops. Below the central tabletop, 150 cm wide, is a treasure chest. There are 2 flat table-size surfaces (15 mm ply) separated by about 5 cm of air. Horizontally they are divided into five pigeonholes each (dividers hold the whole sandwich together). So there's 10 in total. Each has a sliding flat drawer to nearly the whole depth of the table, with a safety tab so it won't fall out. Inside these I store the small stuff - I had a fortune to buy a few clear but not brittle plastic thread-and-needle boxes with 12 compartment just the length of 1 watt resistor with leads. So 12 such boxes are for all E24 resistors one could imagine, etc. I must confess I store power FETs and (what a blasphemy) FET opamps in these boxes, too. So far no failures (sin sin sin!).
