I think these are going to work well. I was originally going to make some devices from concave door pulls($.88 each) from Home Depot and wood blocks, cutting the stem off the pull and routing the wood deep enough to make a barrier to keep the bearing from running over the edge, but I happened to find some other materials at Sutherland's that made things very easy. Sutherland's also sells a concave door knob(Belwith P-204-26, UPC#7855576882) that happens to fit closely into a plastic 1 1/2" round furniture tip(Serva-a-lite 1166-E, UPC#3900800010) that they also sell and the tip is just deep enough to provide a barrier.Cut the stem off the knob with a hacksaw, drag the knob over a file to make it even, and glue it into the plastic tip. Add bearing(I used 7/16"). Top with another knob&tip.
Haven't heard the finished product because I used silicone adhesive and it's still drying. They're a bit of a pain to fiddle with minus the glue. They floated just fine, but the upper knob kept falling out of the tip when I pushed far enough to move the bearing over to one side. No idea how they're going to sound. I was anxious to get them glued and didn't even bother to give them a listening test, yet.
Knobs-$2.39 each
Furniture Tips-$.40 each
7/16" Bearings-$1.70 for five
