These heat pipes make use of the latent heat of vaporization of the working fluid inside, usually some kind of alcohol. As long as you don't heat the thing till it explodes, or put it in an environment where the copper pipe corrodes, it will last as long as you wish. Since convection is used rather than conduction, it can move a lot of heat.
