WRT 'uncompressing', dbx (among others) used to make several Expander models (I have a 4BX). It does wonders for 'restoring' the dynamic range lost in studio/broadcast station limiters, but requires a system that can handle it, as much more power is needed for a given average SPL.Too many CDs, and much of the old vinyl, were/are mixed for the lowest common denominator of consumer gear, so is very compressed with as little as 15dB dynamic peaks, when up to 32dB peak capability (~50x increase in power) is required for accurate reproduction.
BTW, I'm a VOT fan/owner (the theater size, not the small A7), and while their efficiency allows me to use the Expander without giving away the ability to reproduce a recording at 'live' levels, it actually emphasizes any recording's shortcomings far more than a lower efficiency system.
