The clock IS important of course, but aside from damping the crystal, I personally have not explored any other more invasive means of improving on the clocks signal. If you go to the Audio Crafter's Guild Web Page however: www.galstar.com/~ntracy/ACG you will find some interesting articles and essays on the subjects...these are pretty techy articles however, I must warn you.Regarding the lasers RFI, cleaning up power to the laser can be of benefit, including increasing the size of decoupling caps and adding separate regulators if not already regulated. Again, with the regulators, we are talking pretty invasive stuff.
I have had good success with increasing filtering in the PS and using high-quality Harris FREDs or Schottky rectifier diodes. I also typically bypass the PS caps with small film (analog circuits - not necessary for transport only) and ceramic SMD .1uf caps (digital supplies). In addition, I try to take the digital signal from as close as possible to its source and run it in 75ohm shielded or mini coax cable to the critical digital out circuitry. I also upgrade key components in the digital out circuit and have found great results with either upgrading or providing new, a pulse transformer at the digital out. I also us Canare true 75ohm RCA jacks.
Damping of lid and transport also benefits transports.
These things have all proven very effective in the DVD player/transport mods that I have done.
I hope this helps,
Dan W.
