Power transformers are designed for AC use and would not operate as much of a choke under DC conditions because the core would saturate at low DC currents and the inductance would drop way down. Filter chokes used for DC power require an air gap in the core to prevent saturation at low DC currents. Order a Hammond catalog or visit their website. They have a wide selection of high and low power filter chokes available for modest price from many distributors. Toroids will work but generally need to have an air gap cut in the core which is what Ayre does in their amplifiers.
