Even for unbalanced interconnects, the ground wire is a part of the overall eletrical circuit, and must carry the ground return current, so yes, it is just as important as the so-called hot wire.Ground is just an electrical reference point, a sort of agreed to fiction of convenience. It has no special or magical properties.
