...not all caps are created equal.Some are low ESR (Equivalent Series Resistance) and ESL (Equivalent Series Inductance). Given similar construction caps, a bunch of small, paralleled caps will exhibit lower levels of ESR and ESL than one large cap.
I should stress that the effect of paralled caps is most noticable on amplifiers which have a rather poor PSRR (Power Supply Rejection Ratio). A poor PSRR is usually a downside attribtable to ZGNFB (Zero Global Negative FeedBack) amplifiers.
Is the effect significant?
Most emphatically, YES. I have been involved in several double blind tests, involving large caps vs. small caps, in ZGNFB amps since 1979 as both te4stee and tester. The small caps were chosen 100% of the time by all listeners.
