Welding Stands

I have just orded a pair of Atacama Nexus 5 Speaker stands. Once assembled and filled with sand I have no plans to take them apart again.
What I am thinking of doing is welding the joins together to give the stand more strength and rigidity.

Will this work or am I going to be wasting my time?
