The back panel is fixed on these cabinets, and I don't think I want to perform surgery to remove it. Maybe I'll add a plywood panel over the existing back panel, glued and screwed. I'll probably still use the steel brace (or two, per your suggestion) on the outside. The speakers are close to the room corners and the backs won't be seen.
I had another Idea. Around the mouth of the horn are 1"x1" strips of wood. Their purpose is to support the grill frame when it is pushed into place. I'm thinking of removing these and putting a horizontal brace somewhere in the bottom section of the cainet. Maybe a dowel or piece of ply. Also, I plan to install a brace under the cabinet in the center of the base to stiffen the bottom panel.
Under the two layers of paint on these cabinets (blue over red!) is wood veneer in excellent condition. These things are going to look great!
Thanks again for your suggestions and any other comments would be appreciated.
