P-3A DIY power supply

150.215.132.49

Based on a recent post by Dan Wright, I decided to build my own power supply to replace the cheesy, stock unit that came with my Perpetual Technologies P-3A. I contemplated purchasing a Monolithic but I felt that $350 was way too much money to spend on something that just outputs 9v of AC.

I completed the new PS yesterday and the results are very impressive! This is what I've heard:

  • darker background
  • lowered noise floor
  • better imaging - greater separation, wider soundstage
  • better dynamics
  • bass response more extended with greater weight

    Required parts from Digi-Key:

  • TE62081-ND - 9v 5.5 amp toroid transformer
  • HM583-ND - Aluminum box
  • CCM1215-ND - IEC connector w/RF filter
  • 283-2346-ND - fuse holder

The Talema transformer has a dual primary so I wired the inputs and outputs in parallel. The voltage on the secondary of the new transformer is about 0.5 volts higher than the stock AC adapter but this hasn't proven to be a problem (there's obviously a voltage regulator inside of the P-3A and I'm quite confident that it can take the extra 0.5V).

I used the stock AC connector and cord off of the P-3A power supply and picked up a fuse and 8 connector terminal strip from Radio Shack to complete the package.
