Power output is not a consideration in my case since my speakers have a sensitivity of 105dB. Even so the difference is barely .5dB (56W vs. 50W) The signal to noise ratio is a bit more important with this kind of sensitivity. However, even at 92.5 SN+N, the noise sound pressure level will be sitting at 12.5 dB-SPL; the quietest studios are around 20 dB-SPL, while residencial background noise is usually 40dB-SPL plus, depending on location; so it should be more than adequate.
The THD+N for the frequency of interest to me (10KHz) is 0.035% for the LM3875 (at 40W output) while that of the LM3886 is 0.01% for identical conditions. At lower power levels there is less difference.
All of this doesn't predict how either one would sound, and I suspect that a good layout will probably make more difference in the sound of these units than the difference in specs. It would be interesting to build one of each with identical layouts and then compare the performance.
