If the component plugged into the outlet with a high resistance connection
is a typical power amplifier, the result will not be the amplifier "shutting down." Instead, the power supply will be both voltage and
current limited and may cause significant reduction in amplifier output
capability (an audible effect). The same could well occur with a
preamplifier as well.
