here's an hydraulic analogy. One a load is attached current flows one direction since it is doing work and requires an energy loss. If everything was still AC, no work would be done.
In top cylinder the piston creates both an AC voltage and current.
In the bottom cylinder, once the cylinder is tapped, current is actually flowing out in the direction of the valve. It can not suck the current back or the net flow will be zero and there would be no energy transfer
