Make sure you use RTV to seal the four sides of the bottom welded plate in your stand's feet. You will notice that they are only tack welded at the corners and over time, they will leak sand! On the filling the cross bars, which I believe you are referring to, there are a couple of small relief holes already punched into the cross piece. I would take some two part foam and simply inject it into the cross pieces. Easier, and you wouldn't have to worry about them continuously leaking sand. You can find in in Home Supply centers for insulation as well as boating supply houses.
