I had similar complaints and posted my rig on vinyl and many chimed in that I needed better phono gear. I had a TD125, SL8E Rabco arm,Grado Master Reference and a YS Audio Concerto plus tube phono preamp with Mullard 12AX7's. This is vs my MF Trivista tube CD/SACD player. In my A/B phono still had more accurate and real sounding HF and frequency response overall was good. It did not have the separation, image and dynamics of my CDP.
Make sure the tonearm and VTA are adjusted properly. Also your cart is a little weak in my opinion. I've seen but never used a TD165 so I know little of it. How are the tubes in your phono stage? Try a Denonmoving coil if it is properly compliant w/ the tonearm you have since gain is not an issue.
