Open baffle subs, either bipolar or dipolar, can have very good bass response. Unfortunately, there is a tradeoff. Bass is about moving air and an open baffle speaker will require, in general 3 times as many drivers to move the same amount of air as a driver in a cabinet. One consequence is that this type of sub tends to be VERY large. Dipole in general are also relatively sensitive to room placement. They like to be at least 3-4 feet from the back wall and tend to do best placed in the middle of the room. The advantages is the simplified cabinet design and some truly astounding bass. The Martin Logan Statements use dipolar midbass driver array and bipolar subs. It's the best bass I've ever heard. This is the first system that could convincing convey church organ music.
