I would use fresh solder that isn't oxidized badly on the outside. It should look bright and shiny. For your application, a good eutectic alloy of Sn63 Pb37 would suffice or if you can find it, Sn96.5 Ag3.5 would work well and it's lead-free. The alloy I was refering to is probably too difficult to obtain right now but if you get lucky and find Sn95 Ag4.5 Cu0.5, go for it!
