The Marantz SD-8000 cassette player uses optical interrupters for the tape counter and I discovered they go bad. The symptoms are the counter is not working, and the tape deck keeps turning itself off, because the controller doesn't think it is working. I found the optically switched transistor has degenerated too far to work. No easily available module fits, but I found the Radio Shack modules come apart and the driver and receiver fit very well in the PCB holes, and work well without the housing. The optical transistor is reversed to the original model, so I had to do a little rewiring, but nothing difficult.
