In the plastic boxes we put the OEM x-overs in. Two* gas filled DPDT relays per spkr, and a 24 volt AC supply! *The system is bi-amped. The bass-mid driver is driven direct, no low pass, and some Eq. First order HP cascading rapidly to 3rd order, due to an FS notch @1.1k, and upper treble Eq! ALL air coils!
Don't think I'll ever bother with active ;-).
Not at all hard to hear polarity on simply-miked stuff IMO, quite hard to tell on 'most' rock, and popular, and Jazz.
Often the polarity varies between tracks especially compilation type discs.
I had been doing AP switching by swapping leads by hand - for years. I decided that I might well find four banana plugs and sockets - per speaker confusing, let alone tiresome, and the probability of shorting an amp channel was gonna be high.
