Tweaks for systems, rooms and Do It Yourself (DIY) help. FAQ.

Re: Is a dip a room null? Paging Kenster, will ASC help?

I certainly can't add anything that Ethan and Dave have not already mentioned!! Excellent responses gentlemen and I even gained more insight into bass traps by them :-)

I would like to mention that a room is vastly improved by the addition of ASC or similar products and any company U decide to purchase from will certainly be more than willing to assist U in making that purchase/recommendations.

ASC has whats called a MATT test in where U record a frequency sweep of your room using their MATT test CD, Stereophile also has the MATT test sweep on their TEST CD2, send it to them and they will recommend products to address your room issues.

While I use 2 different sizes of ASC 1/4 rounds and the big 1/2 rounds along with the tube trap wall panels, I found that one must implement the proper sized trap in different corners/locations to maximize room tuning and system articulation. That means an 8" 1/4 round vs. a 10.5" 1/4 round can be swapped around the room mainly using the 10.5" units in the corners where 2 long walls intersect and the 8" units in corners where there is a break such as a door/window along the wall.

Of course, this also involves tuning the room by ear with music while swapping traps around to gain the maximum room tuning. I had a 10.5" 1/4 round in the corner behind my subwoofer thinking it was best served there. I then moved it to the opposite corner along the same wall while placing an 8" 1/4 round in it's place which resulted in much better integration of the sub into the room.

There R other tweaks that one can do to boost the performance of the bass traps but start with the basic traps and go from there :-)

Cheers,

~kenster
