Cliff,What you've been doing with the foam is one form of acoustic modification of your room. The roomlens is a different form. If you made the roomlens units, you would probably use one on the outside of each of your speakers to replace the foam on the side walls at the very least.
The basic recommendation is that you also use one centred between your speakers and around mid way between the speakers and the wall behind them. That's where you have your TV which creates problems.
In my room, that's where I have my equipment rack which I can't shift at present. I placed a roomlens on either side of the rack and almost touching it. That seems to work quite well but the rack doesn't have solid sides like a TV and mine only contains a CDP and integrated amp - not a lot of flat side area to cause problems like the side of a TV can, and also not the same front surface area. That means I'm using a total of 4 units - one on each side of the rack and one to the outside of each speaker.
Argent, the people who make the commercial roomlens units, recommend taking out all other room treatments when installing roomlenses. They're assuming, of course, that they're going into a normal furnished room with carpet, sofa, pictures on the walls, etc. Your description of your room suggests that it was very bare and sparsely furnished.
*IF* you want to make roomlenses, I would experiment with trying them with whatever treatment of your TV that you're currently using, and without - maybe just draping a heavy blanket or quilt over it. See what works best and go with that. The aim is to treat YOUR room to improve YOUR enjoyment - what furthers that is what you want.
Personnaly I'd wait a bit and get used to what you currently have and try to get a handle on the shortcomings of that approach. Then I'd consider whether I wanted to builod roomlenses or go for Jon's DIY acoustic panels and bass traps. The choice depends on the size of the problems you're concerned with, the size of your room (all of these things take up space), budget, handyman skills, and what you think will look best in the room. Spouse approval factor may also count heavily but either roomlenses or well made panels and bass traps should look better than foam mattresses, and work better too.
Polyester batting is a polyester "wool" used in quilting and other crafts - it's not a "finished" product like something you buy in IKEA but something you use to make other things. You can buy it in craft shops that sell fabric and other quilting supplies.
