I use them in all my jobs but cant tell if they make any difference (as flat ribbon opposite to wire). Because price is similar, I assume it does not hurt.Gauge only matters in the series bass application or in paralell tweeter application. In midrange units the high DCR is sometimes used in purpose instead of say 1 ohm resistor. So bigger is not always better.
