1. The "8 ft" is probably a local limit on the Code definition of "readily accesible." Hence, a garage door opener receptacle is Excepted from GFCI requirements of 210.8(A)(2)2. Garage receptacles are considered "grade level access" since quite a few homeowners have a 25ft orange extension cord. GFCIs are a Good Thing for grade level access. Change the word "grade" to "ground" and think barefoot.
