If there are other inductors nearby, replacing steel-core with air-core may lead to unwanted interactions. The air-core inductors are physically larger, and their magnetic fields extend much farther into the surrounding space. If another inductor is close enough, the magnetic flux from the first one will induce a voltage in the second one, and vice versa. This will change the effective inductance values and the behavior of the network.It is not simple to replace steel-core inductors with air-core within the same overall layout. You can do so if you are willing to expand the layout and make sure the inductor interaction is minimized. Mount all inductors at right-angles to each other, and separate them as much as is practical.
Avoid contact with bare metal, as the foil edges will be shorted together. Insulation with rubber or Nylon may have bad sonic consequences. Avoid any metal bolts through the inductor center hole. What I have done is to secure the inductors with cotton twine to a cushion made of a plastic bag containing quartz sand. The sand is a benign insulator and is good for mechanical damping. If the metal is steel, I would not bother with the air-core inductors, as the steel will interact with the magnetic field to change the inductance value and cause distortion.
Too much of any dielectric material around the inductor will increase its parasitic capacitance and lower its self-resonance frequency. This will not affect audio-band performance, but may increase susceptibility of connected equipment to RF noise picked up by the associated hardware and wiring.
Teflon tape is good for mechanical damping and is a benign dielectric, but is so soft that it makes a poor insulator if there is any chance of a short-circuit to adjacent bare wires or metal parts. It is better to use short pieces of Teflon tubing in these cases.
