Note the bottom line of the drawing, this should be the common neutral conductor of both the primary and secondary side of the transformer. This connection connected to an ac grounded system where as one hot conductor is intentionally grounded to earth ground, thus becoming the neutral conductor (the grounded conductor). The secondary conductor tapped off of the longer primary winding is the Hot conductor. So in your case from the Hot conductor to the common neutral conductor a difference of potential of 120 volts. If the primary side of the auto transformer is connected correctly, (Polarity is correct), if measurements were taken from the 120V side of the transformer the neutral conductor to earth ground would be zero volts. The Hot to earth ground will be 120V, (nominal).
If you were to reverse the polarity of the primary leads of the transformer you would get the exact readings you are getting.....
