As others have posted the VPI brick is merely laminations of steel encased in a nice wood box. You can duplicate the effect by using old transformers. I cut off the old coil windings and simply use the laminated plates. They should be oriented with the working transformer laminations for best effect. You can use anything ferrous. but magnetic fields, or rather, the magnetic lines like to occupy one layer each. If you want to shrink the fields, use multiple thin layers.
