The reason the negative leads are giving you fits is because the foil traces they're attached to are probably nice and fat, and are acting as heatsinks! I see that a heavy duty tip is available for your iron (#64-2060 @ 2.19) and that is worth a try. A clean, properly wetted tip should do it's thing within seconds, but if not, a better grade of iron is called for.It's actually much easier to learn good soldering technique using a quality industrial iron, and you'll tend to fry things a lot less because they get the solder flowing quickly.
