Your iron may be inadequate

The reason the negative leads are giving you fits is because the foil traces they're attached to are probably nice and fat, and are acting as heatsinks! I see that a heavy duty tip is available for your iron (#64-2060 @ 2.19) and that is worth a try. A clean, properly wetted tip should do it's thing within seconds, but if not, a better grade of iron is called for.

It's actually much easier to learn good soldering technique using a quality industrial iron, and you'll tend to fry things a lot less because they get the solder flowing quickly.

I haven't used Hakko irons, but have heard good things about them. The #936 looks like a good general-purpose iron:
