check the output voltage to see if you get 5VDC +-5%, and the input voltage is at least 1.5V higher than the output (nominal 1.2V, most manufacturers would have a bit of discrepencies on this value).Since 7805 is a workhorse regulator in the EE field (almost come a dime a dozen), it's not worthwile to salvage it. If in doubt, simply get a new one and replace the one you have and then test it again.
