Duster,I used to make my mock spikes with upturned brass acorn nuts. Some guys use arrowheads. Lots of DIYs.
But lately I converted to Meniscus Audio's small cone tips and these are great. At less than a buck apiece in quantity (8 or more), they're a steal and work very very well.
They have larger cones and even humongous cones as well. Just cost more. Take a look on their accessories page.
