I like a softer coupling system.Best I've found is to put my speakers on footers of hardwood. In my case I started with maple dowel plugs as advised from Mapleshade. It worked very well and sounded better than isolation or hard coupling with metal. Then moved up to hardwood spherical sections I got at a hobby store (think like a drawer knob but without any stem), which worked very very well and was smoother. Lately added a thin layer of 1" Herbie's dots between the speaker and that hardwood and that is even better. Have been advised that Herbie's black dots - really a sandwich isolation footer - is very good.
Only question for me is why you think you're going to get best bass tightening by this method. Bass issues are often room acoustics and placement issues.
