Both silicon nitride (Si3N4) and tungsten carbide (WC) are grey rather than brown. WC is a duller grey, Si3N4 quite shiny. By the way they are both ceramics. The easiest way to tell them apart is simply to weigh them, measure the diameter of the ball and derive the density. Tungsten carbide is about the heaviest ceramic in common use - the density is about 15. Silicon Nitride is 3.3, around the density of common ceramics.
As far as I know WC is the harder of the two but Si3N4 seems to be available with better surface finish.
