There are a number of variables involved, and I experimented with a number of them, and found to my dismay, that you could not scale or extrapolate too much from a known good set of parameters.Yes, you can use thicker material of the same starting density, and not compress it down any more than the final design density, but there is a limit. 8" can be done OK, but I don't think that 10" would be a safe bet, even with some compensating extra compression.
BTW, I would use a spacing of 2.375", or an inner diameter of 13.25" for an 18" outer diameter.
The 18" diameter is about as large as I would attempt, as the large size is very unwieldy and difficult to manage and work with, ESPECIALLY of you have not ever done one before.
