Seems like the rec out jacks are differently grounded than the pre-outs. The tape outs are generally buffered. Still odd though...Speaking of RFI, the PC is full of it, hence the advantage of external conversion.
I was quite surprised with the quality of the Griffin iMic, which is quite a handy little external audio i/o USB device for around $30.
