Getting the levels equal from each speaker is simple, and can be achieved via the balance (or volume) controls. Equal volume is only a portion of what affects imaging. The distance from listener to each speaker has a large effect on the imaging (since distance equals time in this context).Of course, it may not be possible to achieve equal distance between each speaker and listener in every environment, in which case experimenting with mono content would be worthwhile (the strength of the early reflections will have a large effect on imaging). While doing this experimentation, it may be advantageous to play with the tone controls if you've got 'em - the imaging may be very different for different parts of the spectrum.
In the end, don't be afraid to set things up the way they sound best to you with the material you listen to the most. If you never listen to mono recordings, who cares how they sound?
