Zener Emitter Follower or lm78xx/79xx based???

Need some help on voltage regulation.. My intention is to modify my pre section power supply..The present pre is regulated +/-with some series resistors, zeners, and a 2sa2362 npn in positive rail and 2sa1016 pnp on negative rail before load.. The pre runs off the main power rails of 42v +/- which is fed through a series 2.7k resistor each rail to the 15.7 volt zeners and 1000uf 35v cap to ground each rail.. after the cap and reverse zeners there is a 270ohm series restor to transistor base each rail, then the obvious .7 drop from b to e..after eack emitter there is a 100uf cap to ground, (all caps are panasonic fc 35v)..Can i install higher voltage zeners such as 24v, pull the transistors and install lm78/79 instead to regulate after zeners, or am i better off with what is in place now over the lm,s..The only measurable fluctuation in voltage i get right now after warm up is within 2/100ths variation under load...
