Maple platforms etc

I've been chasing are slight hardness at higher playback levels. I thought it might be a resonance somewhere, but unsure where. My experience has led me to believe that the most critical area of equipment resonance control is the power conditioner. Well, sure enough, it was in this case too. I have some Mapleshade maple platforms (along with their cork pucks and various cones by Mapleshade and DH) under all my gear except the power conditioner which uses an equally thick piece of maple from a local hardwood supplier. It's obviously of a different grade (better/worse...who knows?) than the mapleshade maple, but I've been using it to good effect on my DIY accuton speakers, and under the PC. It was a step up from the MDF that I was using under the PC previously. Well, I did some reorganizing and ended up with an extra Mapleshade shelf and thought I'd see if I could hear a difference between the two maples under the PC. Yep! Significant difference. The ringing/hardness is gone, and more transparency and detail to boot. Also, the material that you put under the little cork pucks makes a difference to. This resonance control stuff really drives me nuts. Makes me want to get something more comprehensive like the SRA stuff, but I'm just a starving artist type. Time to go count pennies....

Cheers
