I think 9 pin "D" shells are fine for audio use - I use them within my phono preamp so that I can separate the parts for troubleshooting etc. In this service they carry the power supply, the signals (balanced) and the ground, so 7 of the 9 pins are used.The ones available from my local supplier are commercial spec and are rated for 5A per contact at 500 volts. Don't let the cheap price fool you - these things are made by the squillion and margins in the computer game are razor thin.
