Should work great, those very pots are used as attenuators in many scientific instrumentation gears (for example Rohde & Schwartz RF generators -also with digital control-).
Just 2 concerns: (1)to my knowledge, all multiturn pots are linear, not log. So, it's likely you'll stay stuck in the first turns as long as you don't want to play at high volume.
(2) don't forget a mute contact, or you would have wrist sports each time you get a call when listening at high volumes ;-)
