My understanding is that although an SLA battery has very low self discharge, the internal leakage of charge is greatly accelerated by keeping the voltage between the terminals above the standard voltage, which is what is happening when the charger is in circuit. This means that some of the charging current is simply being used to counteract leakage and the larger the battery the greater the leakage so for a small charger on a large battery most of the current is wasted. This extends charging times so where a 500mA charger would charge a 7Ah battery in about a day it would take more than a week to charge a 50Ah battery. In fact the 50Ah battery would never really achieve full charge so you would expect it to lose some life on each charge/discharge cycle.
I must apologise for an error in my original post. When I said that charge rates should be C/10 to C/20 I wasn't thinking straight. They should be 10% of C to 20% of C which corresponds to C/10 to C/5. I use about 14% of C for my L200C circuits so I use a current limit of 1 amp for a 6V 7.2Ah battery not 500mA as I said before.
