Tweakers' Asylum Tweaks for systems, rooms and Do It Yourself (DIY) help. FAQ. |
|
Just wanted follow up on some of the advice given in this post http://www.audioasylum.com/audio/tweaks/messages/120116.html and subsequent posts.I followed tubesforever's advice on speaker placement. However, I took one of the sources of possible error out of the entire process, me. I sat my wife down in my listening chair and told her simply what to do. She has better hearing and I figured she wouldn't confuse matters with a bunch of useless knowledge about imaging, soundstage, etc. I then moved the speakers exactly as suggested. We started with the left speaker and came to a sweet spot of about 1' in dimension measuring front to back, along the side wall. I just told my wife to listen for SOLID bass. We then found a sweet spot of about 8" in dimension moving left to right, away from the side wall. In this case, I just told her to listen for CLEAN/TUNEFUL bass, not too thin and not muddy - she got that concept. We then fine tuned in that 1' x 8" elipse and toed in slightly. We then proceeded with the right speaker and finished up with centering the vocals.
When we were finished the sound was quite good and balanced, and I noticed a couple of things. First, the speakers were positioned a bit differently from each other. Meaning, speaker A was positioned slightly different than speaker B. Also, after taking some measurements, I noticed that the measurements were close to something I had experimented with earlier, that being the Cardas method of speaker placement where:
The distance from the center of the woofer face to the side walls is:
Room Width times .276 (RW x .276)
The distance from the center of the woofer face to the wall behind the speaker is:
Room Width times .447 (RW x .447)
My speakers were 1-1/2" off from the suggested Cardas measurement for the rear wall and about 3" off for the side wall measurement. Needless to say I'm happy with the approach, which took about 45 minutes, and the results.
I tried the Ambiophonics thing with a 4' x 8' sheet of 1/4" plywood between the speakers approaching the listening position. I really didn't care for it. "Tubesforever's" suggestion really resulted in good clean sound with a nice balance of all things we look for in our systems.
Thanks brother. I'm quite pleased.
Jim
